About this Zippo

The Zippo D-Day Normandy 50th Anniversary model 236DD was released in 1994 as Zippo’s Collectible of the Year to commemorate 50 years since the Allied invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944. Its Black Crackle finish deliberately recreates the appearance of the wartime Zippo lighters used during World War II, while the antique brass front emblem was inspired by the sleeve patch worn by Allied troops. The lighter was presented in a distinctive round collector’s tin, with General Dwight D. Eisenhower’s June 6, 1944 message to the Allied forces reproduced inside the lid. Model 236DD is particularly prized by collectors of D-Day memorabilia, military Zippos, Black Crackle models, 1990s Collectible of the Year releases and historically significant World War II commemorative lighters. As one of Zippo’s most notable historical collectibles of the 1990s, the D-Day Normandy 236DD combines military heritage, commemorative packaging and a design closely connected to Zippo’s own wartime history.
